No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
