Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Fans
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an approximate wealth of $16 billion, making the fine manageable for the wealthy owner.
Recent Issues and Public Attention
The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in developing the Cowboys into the globe’s most valuable sports franchise, despite its modern-era championship drought.
The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing effort to uphold proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
